At work. And even home.
This isn’t something new and we are all fully aware of the pressure that women (and men) put on themselves to look and be a certain way.
What actually shocks me about this recurring situation is to hear these same women laugh about it, and for others in the vicinity to also join in, laughing, repeating and reaffirming these negative beliefs.
Now call me oversensitive or maybe it's just me? But when did it become ‘OK’ to treat yourself with such disrespect in front of others, and to really, truly believe it. On top of this: why would you openly encourage and invite negative criticism towards yourself? For FUN?
Now to some, perhaps this is just harmless banter and camaraderie - I don’t know.
But whether you claim this behaviour is ‘OK’ or not - think about the damage it is causing on the inside when you do it. Be careful about the words that you choose to describe yourself.
"Mind your thoughts for they become your words; mind your words for they become your actions; mind your actions for they become your habits; mind your habits for they become your character; watch your character for they become your destiny." (Recently quoted in The Iron Lady (2011) by Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher)
I believe that we each have a responsibility: to look after ourselves. To believe in the good that we have. To nurture our positive qualities and to help ourselves grow and to flourish. Never mind what others think of us.
Just remember to think of something nice to say - or don’t say anything at all.
